Impact of project management information systems (PMIS) on project performance
Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) positively impact project performance by improving planning of project activities, improving monitoring of project activities, improving control of project activities, improving quality of decisions, improving allocation of resources, improving cost management, improving work accuracy, improving team communication, improving stakeholder communication, improving risk management, and increasing work productivity.
Following are empirical studies carried out about the impact of project management information systems on project performance from various parts of the globe.
This study investigated the influence of project management information systems (PMIS) on the performance of project managers in Portugal. Specifically, the study addressed the following objectives: to determine the effect of PMIS system quality on the project manager’s satisfaction with PMIS; to establish the effect of PMIS system quality on the perceived usefulness of PMIS; to explore the effect of PMIS information quality on the project manager’s satisfaction with PMIS; to find out the effect of PMIS information quality on the perceived usefulness of PMIS; to investigate the effect of perceived usefulness with PMIS on the project manager’s satisfaction; to determine the effect of perceived usefulness of PMIS on individual performance; to determine the effect of the project manager’s satisfaction with PMIS on their individual performance; to determine the effect of PMO support on the relationship between satisfaction with PMIS and individual performance; and to determine the impact of PMO support on the relationship between perceived usefulness with PMIS and individual performance (Monteiro et al., 2025).
The target population included 489 project managers (who had experience with PMIS and PMO) drawn from different parts of the world. Out of this, a sample size of 172 respondents was selected to participate in the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze descriptive variables of the study. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used to carry out inferential analysis. The findings of the study were presented in suitable tables as required (Monteiro et al., 2025).
The findings revealed that PMIS system quality has a positive and significant impact on satisfaction with PMIS. In addition, PMIS system quality had a positive and significant impact on the perceived usefulness of PMIS. The results also demonstrated that PMIS information quality had a positive and significant impact on satisfaction with PMIS. It was also shown that PMIS information quality had a positive and significant impact on the perceived usefulness of PMIS. It was also established that PMIS system quality and PMIS information quality explained 61.4% of the variance in satisfaction with PMIS. On the other hand, the results revealed that PMIS system quality and PMIS information quality explained 53.5% variance in perceived usefulness with PMIS (Monteiro et al., 2025).
The findings also revealed that satisfaction with PMIS had a positive and significant impact on individual performance. Also, it was shown that the perceived usefulness of PMIS had a positive and significant impact on individual performance. In addition, perceived usefulness of PMIS was shown to have a positive and significant correlation with satisfaction with PMIS (Monteiro et al., 2025).
Lastly, PMO support was shown to have a positive and significant impact on the relationship between satisfaction with PMIS and individual performance. On the hand, the results revealed that PMO support had a negative impact on the relationship between perceived usefulness with PMIS and individual performance (Monteiro et al., 2025).
This study explored the mediating effect of project risk management on the relationship between information systems use and project management success in Iraqi building construction firms. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the effect of information systems on project management success in Iraqi building construction firms; to find out the effect of information systems use on project risk management in the target firms; to establish the effect of project risk management on the success of project management; to explore the effect of information systems’ dimensions on the success of project management; and to determine the effect of information systems’ dimensions on project risk management (Taresh et al., 2025).
The target population included construction firms in both government and private sectors in Iraq. 95 respondents (specialists and experts working in the Iraqi construction firms) were selected to participate in the study. Data collection was done using questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. The findings were presented in suitable tables as needed (Taresh et al., 2025).
The results of the regression model revealed that use of information systems explained 15.8% of the variance in project management success. This means that information systems had 15.8% ability to predict the success of project management in the target firms. The regression model results also indicated that use of information systems could explain 20.6% variance in project risk management. This means that project risk management could predict 20.6% use of information systems in the target firms. In addition, the results of the regression model showed that project management success could explain 7% variance in project risk management. In addition, the results indicated that information systems’ dimensions could explain 17.2% of the variance in project management success in the target firms. Lastly, the results demonstrated that information systems’ dimensions could explain 21.1% variance in project risk management in the target firms (Taresh et al., 2025).
This study examined the effectiveness of PMIS on the financial wellness of rural households in India. The objectives of the study included the following: to determine the effect of PMIS quality on PMIS effectiveness; to find out the effect of PMIS information quality on PMIS effectiveness; to explore the effect of PMIS service quality on PMIS effectiveness; to establish the effect of PMIS on net benefits of PMIS; to determine the effect of PMIS on financial behavior; to explore the effect of savings behavior on financial behavior; to establish the effect of cash management on financial behavior; to explore the effect of risk-credit management on financial behavior; to determine the effect of net benefits of PMIS on financial attitude; to find out the effect of financial behavior on financial wellness (Purohit et al., 2022).
The target population included 720 participants drawn from households in rural India. Questionnaires were used to collect data from the respondents. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation) were used to analyze descriptive variables of the study. Regression analysis was used to establish the effect of independent variables on the dependent variables. The results were presented using tables as required (Purohit et al., 2022).
The findings revealed that PMIS quality (as represented by usability, data representation, searchability, system accessibility, and overall functionality) significantly contributed to an effective PMIS; information quality (supportive, self-explainable, precise, and easy-to-understand) is an important factor of PMIS effectiveness; service quality (capacity building, training, regular hand-holding, and troubleshooting issues) improves system effectiveness; an effective PMIS significantly benefits the users; and an effective PMIS will benefit in saving the user time, increasing knowledge, evaluating and finding critical gaps, and implementing activities. Thus, PMIS quality, information quality, and service quality all contribute to making the PMIS effective, which in turn contributes significantly to the net benefits of the PMIS (Purohit et al., 2022).
The results also indicated that the net benefit of an effective PMIS has a significant impact on financial behavior; savings behavior has a significant impact on financial behavior; effective cash management has a significant impact on financial behavior; risk-credit management has an insignificant impact on the financial behavior of rural households; financial knowledge and financial practices significantly impact financial attitude; the net benefit of PMIS enhances financial knowledge, which has a significant impact on financial attitudes; positive behavior towards income and savings are key behaviors that influence the financial wellness of rural households; and a positive financial attitude towards financial management and financial knowledge has a significant impact on the financial wellness of rural households (Purohit et al., 2022).
This study investigated the impact of PMIS integration on the performance of construction projects in public schools in Kajiado County, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study included determining the effect of PMIS capacity on the performance of construction projects in public schools in Kajiado, Kenya; examining the effect of PMIS stakeholder management on the performance of construction projects in the target schools; establishing the effect of PMIS cost management on the performance of construction projects in the target schools; and lastly, finding out the effect of PMIS monitoring on the performance of construction projects in target schools (Mutwiri & Yusuf, 2022).
The target population included construction projects in 50 public schools in Kajiado County, Kenya. The sample size included 132 respondents drawn from the target population. They included project supervisors, contractors, and project managers. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation) were used to analyze descriptive variables of the study. Correlation analysis was done to establish the associations among variables under investigation. Regression analysis was employed to explore the impact of independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings were presented in relevant tables as required (Mutwiri & Yusuf, 2022).
The results of the correlation analysis showed that PMIS capacity (including project team expertise, system software, and quality information generated) had a weak but positively significant relationship with the performance of construction projects in the target schools, and PMIS stakeholder management (end user involvement, stakeholder management plan, and feedback) had a positive and significant association with the performance of construction projects in the target schools (Mutwiri & Yusuf, 2022).
The findings of the regression analysis showed that PMIS integration (PMIS capacity, PMIS monitoring, PMIS cost management, and PMIS stakeholder management) explained 79.2% variance in performance of construction projects in the targeted public schools in Kajiado County (Mutwiri & Yusuf, 2022).
This study explored the impact of PMIS on the performance of projects run by commercial banks operating in Nairobi. Specifically, the objectives of the study included the following: to determine the effect of project team expertise on the performance of projects in commercial banks in Nairobi; to establish the effect of end-user involvement on the performance of projects in commercial banks in Nairobi; to find out the effect of project risk management on the performance of projects in commercial banks in Nairobi; and lastly, to examine the effect of project monitoring and evaluation on the performance of projects in commercial banks in Nairobi (Kamau & Pedo, 2021).
The target population included projects run by 42 commercial banks located in Nairobi, Kenya. A census was used in this study to obtain 42 respondents for the study. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation analysis was done to determine the association among the variables being investigated. Regression analysis was used to establish the impact of independent variables on the dependent variable. The results were presented using tables as required (Kamau & Pedo, 2021).
The results of correlation analysis indicated that project team expertise had a positive and significant relationship with the performance of projects in the target banks; end-user involvement had a positive and significant relationship with the performance of projects in the target banks; project risk management had a positive and significant relationship with the performance of projects in the target banks; and project monitoring and evaluation had a positive and significant association with the performance of projects in the target banks. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that project team expertise, end-user involvement, project risk management, and monitoring and evaluation explained 68.3% of variance in performance of projects in the commercial banks in Nairobi, Kenya (Kamau & Pedo, 2021).
This study explored the impact of PMIS on project management performance in diverse industries, including telecommunication, software development, manufacturing, defense, and construction in Korea. The specific objectives of the study included the following: to examine the effect of system quality on project management performance in the target industries; to establish the effect of information quality on project management performance in the target industries; to evaluate the effect of service quality on project management performance in the target industries; to establish the moderating role of industry type on the relationship between PMIS quality (system quality, information quality, service quality) and project management performance in the target industries; to find out the effect of project management performance on user satisfaction; and to establish the effect of project management performance on reuse intention (Park et al., 2021).
The target population included project-based industries including telecommunication, software development, manufacturing, defense, and construction in Korea. 181 individuals were selected to participate in this study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze descriptive variables of the study. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings were presented in relevant tables as required (Park et al., 2021).
According to the results, PMIS quality (system quality, information quality, and service quality) was shown to have a positive and significant impact on project management performance in the target industries. In particular, the results revealed that PMIS quality explained 57.4% of the variance in project management performance in the target industries. The results also showed that reduction in processing time and promptness in decision-making were the performance measures with a positive and significant impact on user satisfaction. The regression model indicated that project management performance measures explained 59.9% of variance in user satisfaction. In addition, the regression model indicated that project management performance measures explained 43.8% variance in reuse intention (Park et al., 2021).
This study investigated the impact of PMIS attributes on the performance of ICT projects in Nairobi County, Kenya. Specifically, the objectives of the study included establishing the effect of PMIS software quality (adaptability, availability, response time, usability, and reliability) on ICT projects’ performance in Nairobi County and finding out the effect of PMIS information quality (relevance, precision, timeliness, accuracy, and consistency) on ICT projects’ performance in Nairobi County. The target population included 610 ICT firms operating in the study location. Out of these, 100 ICT firms were targeted for this study. Consequently, 100 project managers from the target firms who were in charge of PMIS were selected to participate in the study. Data collection was done using questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation. Regression analysis was used to explore the effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings were presented in relevant tables as required (Thuku & Nyang’au, 2021).
The findings of the correlation analysis model indicated that PMIS software quality had a positive and significant association with ICT projects’ performance in Nairobi County and also that PMIS information quality had a positive and significant association with ICT projects’ performance in the target firms in Nairobi County. The results of the regression model indicated that PMIS software quality, PMIS utilization, PMIS information quality, and PMIS users’ satisfaction explained 32.8% of the variance in ICT projects’ performance in the target firms in Nairobi County (Thuku & Nyang’au, 2021).
This study explored the moderating impact of the project team members’ involvement and mediating effect of intention of PMIS use on the relationship between PMIS quality and project success in educational institutions in Pakistan. In particular, the specific objectives of the study were to determine the effect of PMIS quality on project success in educational institutions in Pakistan; to find out the mediating effect of intention of PMIS use on the relationship between PMIS quality and project success; and to establish the moderating role of project team members’ involvement on the relationship between PMIS quality and project success (Rahman et al., 2018).
The target population included two universities in Pakistan: COMSATS Institute of Information Technology and Virtual University of Pakistan. 300 respondents were selected from the two institutions to participate in this study. Data collection was done using questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential analysis models. The findings were presented using suitable tables (Rahman et al., 2018).
The results demonstrated that PMIS quality explained 50.4% variance in project success. The findings further revealed that intention of PMIS use had a positive and significant impact on the relationship between PMIS quality and project success in the target institutions. This means that PMIS use mediates the relationship between PMIS quality and project success in the two educational institutions. The results also demonstrated that project team members’ involvement had a negative and insignificant impact on the relationship between PMIS quality and project success. Thus, project team members’ involvement does not moderate the relationship between PMIS quality and project success in the target educational institutions (Rahman et al., 2018).
This study explored the influence of integrated PMIS efficiency on the performance of road construction projects in South Rift, Kenya. The target population included construction projects undertaken by companies in the South Rift, Kenya. The sample size included 95 respondents drawn from section heads, project supervisors, site engineers, project managers, resident engineers, and assistant resident engineers. Data collection was done using questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Multiple regression analysis was done to establish the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings were presented using charts, graphs, and tables (Kiprotich & Kiptum, 2017).
The results revealed that respondents are in agreement that integrated PMIS efficiency positively impacts the performance of road construction projects in the study area. The findings of the correlation analysis indicated that integrated PMIS efficiency had a positive and significant impact on the performance of construction projects in the study area. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that integrated PMIS efficiency explained 64% variance in project performance. The results indicated that the efficiency of the integrated PMIS had a positive and significant impact on the performance of road construction projects in the study area (Kiprotich & Kiptum, 2017).
This study investigated the impact of PMIS attributes on project performance in youth polytechnics in Embu County, Kenya. Specifically, the objectives of the study included the following: to establish the effect of PMIS system software on the performance of development projects in the target polytechnics; to determine the effect of quality information generated by PMIS on the performance of development projects in the target polytechnics; to explore the effect of PMIS user satisfaction on the performance of development projects in the target polytechnics; and to find out the effect of PMIS use by project managers on the performance of development projects in the target polytechnics (Ngari & Ndiritu, 2017).
The target population included 32 public youth polytechnics in Embu County, Kenya. A sample size of 10 project managers, 43 instructors, and 27 support staff from the target projects was selected to participate in the study. This led to a sample size of 90 respondents being selected to participate in the study. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviations) and correlation analysis using Pearson’s coefficient of correlation. Tables were used to present the results of data analysis (Ngari & Ndiritu, 2017).
The findings revealed a positive and significant association between the following variables: PMIS and project performance; quality of information and project performance; project management information user and project performance; and PMIS use and project performance (Ngari & Ndiritu, 2017).
This study explored the impact of PMIS on the success of World Vision projects in Tanzania. The specific objectives of the study included the following: to analyze the quality of PMIS used in the target projects; to analyze the quality of information output by the PMIS used by the target projects; and to determine PMIS utilization by project teams in the target projects. The target population included 62 World Vision projects spread across Tanzania. 92 participants (30 design monitoring and evaluation officers and 62 project managers) were selected to take part in this study. Data collection was done using questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings were presented in suitable tables as required (Kombe, 2015).
The findings revealed that information generated by the PMIS was of high quality and reliable. It was also shown that PMIS users, that is the project monitoring and evaluation officers as well as the project managers, had been well trained on how to manage the system. The findings indicated that PMIS had positively impacted the performance of projects implemented by World Vision in Tanzania (Kombe, 2015).
This study explored the impact of PMIS on the performance of projects in the construction industry operating in Nairobi County, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study included: to establish the effect of PMIS software on project performance in target companies; to find out the effect of quality information on project performance in target companies; to examine the effect of PMIS user on project performance in target firms; and to explore the effect of PMIS use on project performance in the target firms. The target population included 98 construction companies in Nairobi County. The sample size included 80 respondents drawn from the target population. These included project supervisors, construction managers, and project managers. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (range, frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation). Pearson correlation analysis was used to establish the association among the variables under investigation. The findings were presented in tables as required (Ogero, 2014).
The findings of the correlation analysis revealed that PMIS software had a positive and significant impact on the performance of construction projects in Nairobi County, Kenya; quality of information had a positive and significant impact on project performance in the target firms; PMIS use had a positive and significant impact on project performance; and lastly, PMIS information users had a positive and significant impact on project performance (Ogero, 2014).
This study was conducted to determine the impact of PMIS on decision-making performance in information technology (IT) firms in Bahrain. Specifically, the study addressed the following objectives: to determine the effect of information quality on the decision-making process in IT firms; to establish the effect of analytical quality on the decision-making process in IT firms; to find out the effect of communication quality on the decision-making process in IT firms; and to explore the effect of decision-maker quality on the decision-making process in IT firms (Karim, 2011).
The target population included project teams in IT firms in the kingdom of Bahrain. 170 employees from project teams were chosen to participate in the study. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviations), correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The findings were presented using tables (Karim, 2011).
The findings of correlation analysis showed that information quality had a positive and significant correlation with the decision-making process. The findings also showed that analytical quality had a positive and significant correlation with the decision-making process. The results also showed decision-maker quality had a positive and significant correlation with the decision-making process. Lastly, the findings revealed that communication quality had a weak and negative correlation with the decision-making process. The results of the regression model showed that information quality, analytical quality, and decision-maker quality had a positive and significant impact on the decision-making process in IT firms in Bahrain. On the other hand, communication quality was found to have no significant impact on the decision-making process (Karim, 2011).
This study examined the impact of project management information systems (PMIS) on project managers and project success in Canadian firms. The specific objectives of the study included the following: to determine the effect of PMIS quality on PMIS information quality; to establish the effect of PMIS quality on PMIS use; to determine the effect of PMIS quality on project managers; to demonstrate the effect of PMIS information quality on PMIS use; to establish the effect of PMIS information quality on project managers; to determine the effect of PMIS use on project managers; to find out the effect of PMIS use on project success; and to explore the effect of project managers on project success (Raymond & Bergeron, 2008).
The target population included Canadian firms operating in the services, manufacturing, construction, and public sectors. Participants in this study included project managers/directors/coordinators, project management consultants, senior advisors, top managers, project engineers, and project analysts. Consequently, 224 respondents were selected to participate in this study. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. The findings were presented in suitable tables as required (Raymond & Bergeron, 2008).
The findings revealed that: PMIS quality had a positive and significant effect on PMIS information quality; PMIS quality had a positive but insignificant effect on PMIS use; PMIS quality had a positive but insignificant effect on project manager; PMIS information quality had a positive and significant effect on PMIS use; PMIS information quality had a positive and significant effect on project manager; PMIS use had a positive and significant effect on project manager; PMIS had a positive effect on project success; and project manager had a positive and significant effect on project success (Raymond & Bergeron, 2008).
